Last night, a friend invited a bunch of us to watch a screening of
Sherrybaby with a Q&A with Maggie Gyllenhaal afterwards. She's nominated for a Golden Globe Best Actress award for this performance. The film was interesting, mostly pretty depressing, but a tiny bit hopefull at the end. Maggie's acting was stellar as usual, but I don't know if she deserves a Best Actress award - especially considering her competition.

The Q&A was fun and shed a little more light on Maggie. She was very open and honest about many aspects of shooting the movie, including the fact that she had a tempestuous relationship with the writer/director, Laurie Collyer. She admits she was young and stubborn, but also that she just didn't always see eye-to-eye with her director. Even though she kept reiterating that she's so proud of Laurie and of the movie, I got the feeling that she would shy away from working with Laurie again.

Here's the basic premise of the movie - I'd probably wait for DVD unless you're just dying to see it:
Sherry Swanson returns home to New Jersey after serving a three year prison sentence. Eager to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter, Sherry soon discovers that coming back to the world she left behind is far more difficult than she had planned.

I'd give it a 7/10...reminded of Erin Brokovich mixed with Monster.
